O for a thousand tongues to sing is een lied dat is geselecteerd uit een groter gedicht van Charles Wesley, geschreven in 1739 bij de eerste verjaardag van zijn bekering. Het wordt op vele melodieën gezongen (zie beneden).

Ontstaan

In 1739 schreef Charles Wesley een langer gedicht (18 strofen) 'For the Anniversary Day of One’s Conversion' (zie boven). Het werd gepubliceerd in Hymns and Sacred Poems van de broers John en Charles, uitgave London 1740, p. 120-123. De hymn O for a thousand tongues to sing selecteert een aantal verzen uit dat geheel, welke verzen varieert.
In de kringen van de Gospel Hymns waren dat doorgaans de strofen 7-10. Die zijn dan ook door Bromet vertaald in het Nederlands: O, had ik duizend tongen meer. De New English Hymnal geeft de strofen 7, 9, 10, 11, 12 en 8.
De beginregel van de hymn (of vers 7) is door een Moravische broeder, Peter Böhler, doorgegeven aan Wesley, en is afkomstig van het Duitse lied O dass ich tausend Zungen hätte.

Muziek

In de Verenigde Staten wordt O for a thousand tongues to sing meestal gezongen op Azmon een door Lowell Mason bewerkte melodie van Carl Gotthelf Gläser (1784-1829). In Engeland worden Richmond van Thomas Haweis (1734-1820) en Lyngham van Thomas Jarman (1776-1861) meer gebruikt.
De New English Hymnal geeft intussen Oxford New en Arden van George Thalben-Ball (1896-1987); de Gospel Hymns gebruiken Coronation van Oliver Holden (1765-1844), de Sacred Songs & Solos York uit het Scottish Psalter. Zie hymnary.org voor de rest van de in totaal 59 melodieën.
