Ontstaan

Het lied is eerder geschreven (1850), maar werd pas bekend door het gebruik ervan door Ira David Sankey. Het verscheen met de muziek van Bliss in Geo. F. Root, The Prize. A Collection of Songs, Hymns, Chants, Anthems and Concert Pieces for the Sunday School, Cincinnati: John Church & Co. [1870], p. 146-147, met erboven: Words suggested by D. Haydn Lloyd. Music by P.P. Bliss.
