Het eerste online te vinden spoor is in William Hunter & Samuel Wakefield, The Minstrel of Zion. A book of religious songs, accompanied with appropriate music, chiefly original, Philadelphia: Sorin & Ball, 1845, p. 94-95.

Muziek

Het lied verscheen in 1845 met een eigen melodie scan hymnary, maar wordt doorgaans gezongen op een anonieme melodie met twee varianten: The Eden above (Old Melody) en Will you go (12333).
