Ontstaan

Het lied is geschreven tijdens een opwekking in Newark, NJ, in 1863-4, en werd bekend door de bijeenkomsten van Dwight L. Moody en Ira David Sankey. Het geldt als één van de meest ‘effectieve’ liederen in Sankey’s arsenaal. In zijn memoires (My Life, 1907, 202-206) vult hij een drietal pagina’s met concrete herinneringen aan mensen die door het lied geraakt zijn.

Inhoud

Het lied is een typisch voorbeeld van een lied dat het evangelie onderwijst en ‘preekt’ en met het slotvers voor een beslissing plaatst. De vorm van een solo-lied met een herhaalde slotregel als ‘koor’ dat door meer mensen gezongen wordt, versterkt de inhoud.

Naast Perkins heeft ook Philip Paul Bliss een melodie geleverd, gepubliceerd in zijn Gospel Songs van 1874 p. 4.
